Sport at St Olave's Prep is about enjoying being active, developing a healthy spirit of competition and having fun. PE is taught by our specialist PE teacher from Nursery to Year 6 and we cover all areas of the National Curriculum.
Whilst skill development is a focus for all lessons, developing a love of being active, fostering teamwork and having a healthy spirit of competition are the priorities for all children.
EYFS and Lower School
In EYFS, our children have specialist PE lessons daily. In Year 1 and 2 the children have two PE lessons a week covering gymnastics, dance, ball skills and team games with swimming introduced from Year 2. Whilst key skills are taught in preparation for the traditional summer and winter sports, the emphasis is always upon enjoyment and fostering a lifelong love of being active. This includes the introduction of inter-school festivals in a range of sports.
Years 3 - 6
From Year 3 the children have PE and then a Games afternoon, where in winter they enjoy playing football, netball, tag rugby, cross-country and gymnastics and in summer the key sports are cricket, athletics and rounders. The school hosts a number of tournaments and festivals throughout the year, in addition to playing in regional leagues with independent and local maintained schools.
In the Summer Term, we hold a traditional Sports Day where there is healthy competition between friends and the four houses. In addition to the many fixtures, house sports events provide further opportunities for participation.
At St Olave's Prep we play to win but our priority is always to promote the pleasure of participating and being active. Being a small school, all of the children have the opportunity to represent their school and take pride in doing so.
